Acrylic-Polyurethane Hybrid Solutions for Performance Roof Coatings

Posted by Performance Coatings Team on 03/07/2023

Roofs are one of the most important parts of a commercial building as the first line of defense against sunlight (both infrared and UV), rain, hail and physical damage from the elements. The market for liquid-applied roof coatings continues to grow as these roofing systems offer dependable protection against weathering, dirt pick-up and ponding water damage.

Liquid roofing systems form a monolithic, fully adhered, fluid applied roofing membrane. They have elastic properties that allow it to stretch and return to their original shape without damage and can be used as primers, basecoats or topcoats over many substrates. They extend service life by modulating temperature fluctuations, which reduces thermal expansion and contraction, and they protect the underlying material from water, UV radiation, chemicals and wear. This versatility of performance allows for smart, economical roofing solutions across all geographic regions.

Hybrid Roof Coating Solutions

Water-based acrylic polyurethane hybrid polymers are designed for high-performance coatings for both roofs and vertical facades. Acrylic-based resins have demonstrated several advantages over other roof coating technologies. From an application and sustainability perspective, they are easier to apply compared to solvent-based or two-component systems and have regulatory advantages compared to solvent-based systems.

For building owners, they provide exceptional durability with excellent resistance to UV and thermal aging. Together with very low water uptake and capillary absorption, they can provide for longer intervals between re-coat application.

Reflective Roofing

When used in solar reflective roofs (a.k.a. cool roofs), these hybrid polymers remain smooth, clean and white to keep the reflective properties and not compromise the efficiency of the cool roof, while also maintaining required elasticity over time. Reflective roof coatings limit heat absorption by reflecting the sun’s heat back into the atmosphere. The result is energy savings/lower air conditioning costs by reducing the amount of heat coming through the roof and into the building.

Lubrizol’s Hybrid Technology

Lubrizol has developed several acrylic polyurethane hybrid polymers under the Carboset® brand name that balance performance (low water absorption and balanced mechanical properties for a wide range of climate conditions) and durability (aging, UV and weather resistance). These resins enable smooth, elastic films that reduce dirt pick up to keep their reflectiveness and energy-saving qualities over time in reflective roofs.

A few of these Carboset® acrylic hybrid resins include:

  • Carboset® CA 1009 is an APEO-, formaldehyde-, and NMP-free* water- based hybrid polymer designed for formulating roof topcoats and primers. It can be formulated into coatings under 50 g/L VOC (USA) and demonstrates excellent bitumen bleed-through resistance, making it ideal for use on new or weathered bitumen substrates.
  • Carboset® 2922 is a new high solid, water-based acrylic polyurethane hybrid emulsion developed specifically for roof and building facade coatings. It allows for flexibility in formulating tough, durable coatings for a broad range of applications, and the ability to be formulated to satisfy codes and approvals, such as ASTM D 6083, across all geographic regions – including cold weather climates with its excellent low-temperature flexibility performance.

With these and other advanced Lubrizol roof coating technologies, formulators can improve coating performance and production efficiency. Contractors and architects can shorten construction schedules and reduce labor costs. Property owners will enjoy long-lasting, visually appealing surfaces with seamless, UV resistant and waterproof membranes that protect roof substrates from the sun, rain and other environmental conditions.
