Fermented Beauty Growing in Popularity

Consumers are loving fermented beauty! Lifestyle Asia reported in July that fermented beauty continues to be one of the top eight K-Beauty trends of the year. Allure recently reported that fermented ingredients may do wonders for the skin and this specialty ingredient is increasingly popping up in moisturizers, toners and serums.

Along with the beauty benefit, consumers are also liking that these natural and biodegradable ingredients support sustainability by using clean technology, requiring lower land usage and minimizing ingredient harvesting from nature.

Sometimes described as natural chemistry, fermentation adds microorganisms to a source, breaking it down and making it more easily absorbed and effective on the skin. At Lubrizol Life Science – Beauty, we use fermentation in both our active and functional ingredients.

For example, with our cosmetic active ingredients, fermentation of native microorganisms isolated from exotic environments is used to take advantage of the metabolic potential they developed to adapt and thrive in specific environmental niches.

Our Antarcticine® marine ingredient is made from an Antarctic ferment rich in glycoproteins that provide protection from the cold with skin regeneration properties. Telophi™ biotech ingredient is produced from a microorganism that helps to maintain the health and harmony of the coral reef ecosystem and confers similar benefits to restore emotional and facial harmony, while Lumicease™ blue ingredient is made from the ferments of the polyextremophile Exiguobacterium genus that has proven adaptative responses upon UV and blue light.

As it relates to functional ingredients, fermentation is a path enabling alternatives to petrochemical sources for the creation of more natural and sustainable ingredients. Examples in this category include our rheology modifier Kelco-Care™ diutan gum, suspending agent Arbalon™ cellulose liquid and emollient AlgaPūr™ HSHO algae oil.
