Ancient Protection Against Skin Damage

The Maya and Aztecs did not have access to medicine cabinets full of creams and lotions. Out of necessity, they turned to natural ingredients to protect and care for their skin.

Luckily, they had access to one of Nature’s most potent skincare ingredients: aloe vera. The aloe vera plant was cultivated by those civilizations to soothe, protect and repair skin damaged by the sun, burns or other causes.

Those same properties are available today from our active ingredient, Activera™ 1-1PA aloe ingredient. Derived from organically grown aloe vera plants in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas, it is rich in the juice from the inner part of the leaf, which contains water and the key components that make aloe vera effective, mainly polysaccharides, polyphenols and organic acids, among other phytochemicals. Acemannan, the predominant polysaccharide in aloe vera, is associated with a number of benefits, including skin healing, antiviral and antibacterial properties and increased collagen and hyaluronic acid synthesis.

Activera 1-1PA aloe ingredient, rich in acemannan, reduces redness and quickly restores skin barrier function after damage.

A study was performed on 14 adult volunteers who first induced damage to their skin with sodium lauryl sulfate. A cream containing 2% Activera™ 1-1PA aloe ingredient and a placebo cream were applied on their arms twice a day until the skin recovered to its original state.

Skin redness was analyzed before and after surfactant-induced damage, after first product application, and every 2-3 days until the skin was recovered. The appearance of skin redness was reduced 29.3% faster in those subjects who used the Activera™ 1-1PA aloe ingredient cream.

Transepidermal water loss was analyzed before and after surfactant-induced damage, after first product application, and every 2-3 days until the skin was recovered. The skin treated with Activera™ 1-1PA aloe ingredient recovered 10.5% faster, which helped prevent skin dehydration.

Clear, water-soluble Activera™ 1-1PA aloe ingredient is ideal for products to reduce the appearance of redness and improve skin barrier function, such as treatments for sunburn or redness caused by cold. Another use is products that counteract the dehydrating and irritating effects of excessive use of hydroalcoholic gels. Its use in waterless formulas decreases water consumption and helps make products more potent and sustainable.
