Lubrizol is committed to developing, producing and marketing our products in a manner that continually reduces risk to our customers, employees, end users and the environment. Consistent with our Product Safety Policy, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement of product-related health, safety and environmental performance are top priorities for Lubrizol. To ensure compliance and to meet customer needs, we employ a variety of tools and processes, including “heat mapping” of chemical substances and a proprietary index of chemicals’ environmental and lifecycle impacts.
Our product health and safety efforts are led by a global team focused on product regulatory compliance, toxicology and hazard communication. The group has centers of excellence in the U.S., Asia Pacific, Europe and India. These activities are further supported by business-specific product stewards.
Lubrizol is committed to providing information about its products, how they are used, their manufacturing and distribution, and their associated health, safety and environmental information.
Our product stewardship summaries outline this information and categorize products based on market application and chemical composition. Our product categories are then prioritized based on production volume, likelihood of human and/or environmental contact and the environmental and human health hazards and risks associated with their chemical compositions. The environmental and human health hazards and risks are identified through toxicology and ecological data generated by our participation in regional programs such as the U.S. High Production Volume (HPV) Chemical Challenge and the Canadian Chemical Risk Management Program, as well as regulatory programs such as the European Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) initiative. Information is also gathered through voluntary product stewardship activities.
Available product stewardship summaries provide general information about our products. They are not intended to provide a detailed discussion of all environmental, safety and health information. Product stewardship summaries do not replace or supplant required regulatory communication documents. More detailed health and safety information is available on the applicable Lubrizol Safety Data Sheets (SDS). For avoidance of doubt, the information contained on this page is subject to the Lubrizol.com Terms of Use.
Lubrizol’s innovative approach to product safety assessment utilizing our Heat Map and Process Tool was recognized with the Responsible Care® Product Safety Award at the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) 2019 Responsible Care and Sustainability Conference. This award recognizes member companies that have excelled at driving continuous improvement in chemical product safety.
Lubrizol’s Product Safety Heat Map Process and Tool enables a new way to keep ahead of vast amounts of complex and ever-changing data as we assess the safety of our products. The process and substance “heat map” – a visual representation of data that is fully interactive – allows for an integrated risk approach combining business and regulatory impact. Using the heat map, we can identify possible action, develop alternative chemistries, respond to regulatory concerns and communicate issues to our stakeholders much more quickly and efficiently.
