Lubrizol Partners with Suzano for Pre-Launch of Carbopol® BioSense in Brazil, Advancing Biodegradable Solutions

March 28, 2025

The new product strengthens the commitment of two industry leaders in building the bioeconomy through more sustainable solutions.

Lubrizol, a global science-based specialty chemistry company, announces the pre-launch of the new Carbopol® BioSense polymer in Brazil, the first readily biodegradable ingredient in the Carbopol® line. Developed in partnership with Suzano, the world’s largest producer of pulp and a global leader in manufacturing bioproducts derived from eucalyptus, the new ingredient is the result of more than five years of joint research and innovation, marking a milestone in the cosmetics industry by combining high performance and sustainability.

The Carbopol® line, globally recognized for the most reliable rheological modifiers on the market, is widely used to enhance viscosity and consistency in hair gels, body lotions, moisturizing gels, hair styling gels, shampoos, sunscreens, pharmaceutical products, and household care products, among others.

"Since its creation more than 50 years ago, Carbopol® has always been synonymous with innovation and superior quality. Now, with the new Carbopol® BioSense polymer, we take another pioneering step by offering a unique solution that combines technical performance with an unprecedented sustainable profile in the market," highlights Bernardo Medeiros, Global Vice President of Lubrizol Life Science and Vice President of Lubrizol in Latin America.

According to Medeiros, the new ingredient will enable the creation of innovative formulations for the beauty market, including skincare and sun protection, such as serums, creams, and lotions. "It also stands out for its ability to replace silicone elastomers, providing a high-performance tactile experience comparable to synthetics, without compromising the natural and sustainable benefits of the formulations. It will enable the creation of innovative formulations that meet the growing demand for natural products in the global market," he explains. "In a study conducted with 30 consumers, we concluded that no differences could be identified between formulations using this type of silicone and the Carbopol® BioSense polymer, something extremely unique and innovative for the market."

The Carbopol® BioSense polymer is made from microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) produced by Suzano, a natural and biodegradable material sourced from certified forests, ensuring responsible forest management that respects environmental, social, and economic aspects.

With more than 98% natural origin and certified by COSMOS/ECOCERT—one of the main international standards for natural and organic cosmetics—the new polymer meets the highest sustainability standards. "This innovation reflects our commitment to the principles of Green Chemistry and to reducing environmental impact throughout the entire production chain," adds Medeiros.

The partnership between Lubrizol and Suzano was essential in turning this vision into reality. While Lubrizol brought its technical expertise in developing rheological modifiers and its understanding of the cosmetic market’s needs, Suzano contributed with its production and forestry infrastructure, R&D, deep knowledge of eucalyptus biomass, and extensive experience in the development of cellulosic biomaterials. "This partnership combines our complementary and differentiated strengths to deliver a disruptive solution that redefines the standards of the cosmetics industry and aligns with our purpose of Renewing Life Inspired by Trees," says Miguel Sieh, Director of New Business at Suzano. "The new solution reflects the combination of innovation and sustainability, addressing the growing market and societal demand for more sustainable solutions," says the executive.

The Carbopol® BioSense polymer has already attracted interest from major players in the global cosmetics sector. The official launch will take place at in-cosmetics Global in Amsterdam from April 8-10, 2025. In Brazil, a pre-launch celebrates not only the product but also its national origin, with Brazilian raw materials expanding boundaries to international markets.

"We are confident that the Carbopol® BioSense polymer will have a significant impact on the industry by meeting the demands for sustainability without compromising performance. This is just the beginning; we will continue exploring new possibilities through this strategic partnership," concludes Medeiros.
