Market ChallengesA Simpler Approach To Providing Thin Film Rust Preventive Performance

Market Challenges

Now you can help your customers meet the increasing performance demands in the transportation and industrial markets. The ALOX® advanced thin film family consists of three new products, each providing extended performance and additional competitive advantage over our traditional product range:

  • ALOX® 2100 calcium package offering over 100 hours of salt spray protection with improved solubility and water separation performance
  • ALOX® 2188 barium package offering up to 100 hours of salt spray performance for customers that still require barium, with enhanced water separation, solubility, and cold temperature stability performance
  • ALOX® 2165 calcium package enabling customers to achieve 72 hours of salt spray performance while providing exceptional solubility and cold temperature stability both in conventional and non-traditional oils and solvents

Are You Ready for Tougher VOC Requirements?

Large Ship with CoilsVOCs are of concern to regulators due to their potentially negative impact on the environment, worker health, and safety. The rust preventive technologies used by the metalworking industry worldwide have long depended on traditional solvent- and oil-based chemistries, which are potential sources of VOC content. In fact, well over 75 percent of the worldwide metalworking market today uses coatings based on liquid petroleum distillates to protect industrial metals from rust. But the industry is facing a watershed moment, with the enactment of the South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Rule 1144 - scheduled to go into effect for metal stampers in January, 2012. Somewhat less stringent guidelines for VOCs in specific industries have already been initiated in other eco-sensitive states such as Illinois and New Jersey.

Since meeting the Rule 1144 standard with any solvent- or oil-based product is virtually impossible, industrial additive manufacturers have been working to develop alternative technologies capable of sustaining the rust-preventive performance levels that customers have come to expect.

Rolled Metal CoilsLubrizol’s water-based additive technologies deliver rust-preventing performance through a water dispersion. When the water evaporates, a protective film remains providing required levels of customer-specified performance as appropriate to various application requirements. As part of the high-performance ALOX family of rust preventives, AQUALOX™ additives provide exceptional and consistent protection barriers to meet a full range of film, wetting, and coating characteristics for industrial metal manufacturing.
